Choosing the wrong one makes the programme fail regardless of budget. **Table of Contents** - [What is an incentive programme for?](#what-is-an-incentive-programme-for)

The word*trip*then quietly decides the format — usually the one the company ran last year. That is how a programme designed to reward a sales team ends up looking like a strategy workshop, and vice versa. Incentive, retreat and team camp are not three names for the same thing. They solve different problems, use different formats, and fail in different ways. ## What is an incentive programme for? **Problem it solves:**making performance visible and rewarding it in a way the team recognises as fair. An incentive is earned, not given. Its defining feature is not the destination but the**selection criterion**: who qualified, and why. If that criterion is unclear or feels arbitrary, the programme does the opposite of its purpose — it demotivates the people who did not qualify without motivating those who did. Characteristics: participant group is limited and defined by results; the programme is deliberately better than the company's ordinary standard; the announcement matters as much as the trip itself; the award moment is a designed part of the agenda. **Most common failure:**announcing the criterion after the fact. The criterion must be published at the start of the period it measures. ## What is a corporate retreat for? **Problem it solves:**giving a team the uninterrupted time and distance needed to think about something difficult. A retreat is a working format. The travel is the enabler, not the content. What makes it work is removing the participants from their normal interruption pattern — which means it fails the moment the agenda is packed with sightseeing. Characteristics: smaller group (typically under forty); at least one overnight; a working session with a defined output; a venue with a usable meeting space; deliberately unscheduled time in the agenda. **Most common failure:**over-programming. A retreat with no gaps produces no thinking. The empty hours are the product. ## What is a team camp for? **Problem it solves:**building working relationships between people who do not normally work together. This is the format for teams that have grown, merged, gone hybrid, or absorbed a wave of new hires. Its measure of success is not satisfaction but whether people who had never spoken now know each other well enough to pick up the phone. Characteristics: broad participation, mixed departments; activities that require cooperation rather than competition; deliberately mixed groupings; shared meals as a structural element, not a break. **Most common failure:**letting people self-select their groups. Left alone, everyone sits with their own department and the programme changes nothing. ## Side by sideIncentiveRetreatTeam campPurposeReward performanceThink and decideBuild relationshipsParticipantsQualified, limitedSmall, definedBroad, mixedTypical size15-8010-4040-300Duration2-4 days1-3 days1-2 daysAgenda densityHigh, celebratoryLow, deliberate gapsMedium, activity-ledSuccess measurePerceived fairnessDecisions producedNew working tiesBudget weightExperience qualityVenue and timeActivity and logistics ## Can the formats be combined? Partly. A retreat can close with an award segment, and a team camp can carry a short strategy session. What does not work is combining incentive and team camp: one is exclusive by definition, the other inclusive. Running them together makes the non-qualifying participants spectators at someone else's reward. If both needs are real, they belong in two programmes at different times of year — which is usually cheaper than one compromised programme that satisfies neither. ## How do you decide? One question settles it most of the time:**what will be different in the organisation three months after this programme?** If the answer is "the top performers will feel their results were recognised", it is an incentive. If it is "we will have decided our direction for next year", it is a retreat. If it is "the new joiners will no longer feel like outsiders", it is a team camp. If there is no answer, the format is not the problem — the brief is. - Tags:
